Yurt Raising in 2009, at Living Earth Garden Project

When we were deciding what sort of structure to build on our 3 acre homestead, we looked far and wide, considering our options, and deciding what would be a good first step! We settled on a yurt, for a number of reasons, including: relatively inexpensive housing choice, minimal permits needed, and experiencing life in the round. We chose a local yurt building company. One that would work with us on some of our specific requirements around building materials. The company we chose had, what we thought at the time, unique features we were excited about: real windows (opposed to plastic sheeting windows) and paneled walls covering the lattice where desired. This was purported to be a company who took pride in their work - we were to find out that that wasn't true completely, but that's a story for our book!

What we want to share on this post, is photos of our yurt raising! Which happened 14 years ago exactly! We "raised" our family home with our 3 daughters, and the help of some friends for key moments, including a dozen or so friends for the roof raising! Our daughters were 8, 11 and 12 at the time of our yurt raising, and this time was one of the most memorable times of our family's history! What an incredible journey and blessing as a young family!

Things of note about our yurt raising: we began in November of 2009. We used very little power tools, choosing instead to use hand tools, and some drills at the end to tighten everything up. We had very little building experience. It took a couple of months to complete the main build. If we can do it, so can you!!
